Giant Fishtail Palms in front of the National Library building.

Singapore is a Garden City because the greenery has been consciously created. Trees were planted and maintained in good health throughout their permitted life-span on the spot they stand be it in the park or by the side of our roads in the city, in the sub-urban areas and along the expressways. They grow tall, some of them like these two rows of handsome Giant Fishtail Palms (Caryota no) that are natives of Borneo in front of the National Library Board building along Victoria Street. You do not have to walk in the park to enjoy nature. Singapore is not a city of concrete. We have so many trees that are just taken for granted and not given any attention. Even the shade they provide is not something that would warrant any admiration from people who walk in them.
Luckily they are well loved by the National Parks Board and because of this government organisation, we do not have to go to the parks if we are interested in looking at trees.
Look at the smooth trunks of these beautiful giants. They are strong and study supporting a crown of fan-shaped leaves that protect us from the direct heat of the sun.
Opposite the National Library are these lovely Catholic Church buildings that have stood their ground for more than half a century or more with different trees around them.

Back to the Giant Fishtail Palm, here's a close-up of the leaves that are a little different from the usual Fishtail Palms you see in the parks.

The bunches of fruits are longer than those of the smaller Fishtail palm.
